Today’s lesson (Wednesday 3rd Oct): Audience Research

WHAT DO THE TARGET AUDIENCE – STUDENTS AT LUDLOW COLLEGE, WANT FROM THE NEW MAGAZINE?
Step One: Initial Ideas
Before you can research the target audience you need to have given some thought to the following points in relation to the student magazine you are going to produce:
·         Name / connotations of names…..
·         Content
·         House style
·         Mode of address
·         Images / pictures
·         Price
Remember you must consider these elements in terms of audience.
E.G.
What are you going to call your new magazine?
How are you going to attract the audience and create a brand identity through the name of the magazine?
What are the connotations of the name?
Your task is to think about possibilities for the points above. You could put this in a blog post titled Research & Planning: Initial ideas for student magazine.

Step Two: Research the target audience
You need to devise some open ended questions to find out what the target audience thinks about your initial ideas.
E.G.
Which name do you like the most and why?
What connotations do you feeling the colour scheme /palette has?

Focus groups 4-6 people
Open ended questions
In advance, decide how you are going to record the responses, e.g. film, take notes…it’s up to you!

AS Media Studies Coursework Brief

Below is a summary of your coursework brief for this year:

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. All images and text used must be original, produced by the candidate(s), minimum of four images per candidate.

Welcome to the AS Media Blog....

Welcome to this year’s AS Media Blog!

As the coursework project progresses you will find lots of relevant information, pointers and tips on this blog which will enable you to make a success of the project.

Have a look at the links on the right hand side:

  • Pete’s Media Blog: Pete is the chief examiner for OCR, our exam board. His blog is an invaluable resource for all AS Media students.

  • The OCR Exam Board Blog: This contains loads of really useful information about coursework and all things related to the Media Studies course.
  • Ludlow College AS Media Blog 2011 – 2012: Last year’s AS Media Blogs are a great resource for you to look around in terms of finding out what the process of start to finish looks like.

I will add more relevant links as we go on.

Please do remember that your blog is available for anyone to see and ultimately will be read and marked by the exam board. With this in mind, you should approach each post that your write as a formal essay: use standard English, check spelling, check grammar and finally don’t post comments on my blog or any student’s blog unless I ask you to do so.

Happy blogging!
